9/06/2019 Marquis Shield | Final Round

The final round of Marquis Shield saw our 12-man club side put on its best performance of the 5-round tournament by overcoming Mahunga 10 - 2 in the singles and 4 - 2 in the four ball matches. Singles winners were Sam Forrester, Simon Dew, Pim Borren and Geoff Masters. Intermediate winners were Harry Quinn and Mike Dixon and the four Juniors were Brian Pollock, Gary Stewart, Simon Richardson and Alan Kempsell. Only Pim Borren and Geoff Masters and Hira Renata and Harry Quinn dropped their four ball matches.

In the off-the-stick, we were on fire with the Seniors and Juniors winning all their matches and Mike Dixon and Harry Quinn winning in the Intermediates for another 10 - 2 victory.

That result meant that we were right in the hunt for five of the six end-of-season Trophy Events. But in the end, we prevailed only in the Marquis Cup for the most off-the-stick Singles victories in the season. And we were the bridesmaid in 4 of the remaining five events being second in all Three “off the stick” Division competitions and we also finished 2nd equal in the prestigious Marquis Shield, two competition points behind Eketahuna.

And, finally, we were 3rd in the Fourball Competition.

So, it was a season of might-have-beens with one poor performance at Martinborough, where we were soundly beaten by Pahiatua, being the difference in the end.
