Masterton player Dean Gray wins The Farriers Wairarapa 54 Hole Open
The Farriers Wairarapa 54 Hole Open golf championship was played on the Masterton Golf Club course over the weekend with local player Dean Gray winning with a score of 204.
This Wellington Golf order of merit tournament has a long history as a 72 hole event but this is the first year that the number of holes has been reduced to 54.
A strong field faced the starter with the course in excellent condition despite the heavy rain experienced in the preceding week. Keeping the ball away from the heavy damp rough was a must but soft greens made the short game a little easier.
Local player Dean Gray quickly set the pace with the tournament low score of 5 under par 66 in the first round. He was closely followed by ex Masterton player Jeff Tuoro with a 67. At the end of 36 holes Gray was still leading with a score of 136 followed by Tuoro 2 shots back on 138 and 3 times winner Jono Cane on 139. It was a close game throughout but shared birdies on the 18th hole saw Gray take the win with a 9 under par score of 204 from Cane on 206 and Tuoro on 207.
In the women’s section 36 hole leader Shontalia Williams was overtaken by Erik Cui and Zhuoyi Hu who finished tied on a score of 244 after 54 holes. Erika Cui claimed the win on the first play off hole.
Boulcott Heritage Farm player Bradley Searle was a comfortable leader of the Intermediate section throughout the 3 rounds before winning with a score of 234.[pdf-embedder url=”http://www.mastertongolfclub.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2017-Wairarapa-Open-Final-Results.pdf” title=”2017 Wairarapa Open Final Results”]
